[Smells Like News] One Direction Hit 'MIB 3' Premiere Armed With Toy Guns

'I just think it's fun and the action's great,' Louis Tomlinson tells MTV News on the red carpet.

NEW YORK — Armed with Nerf guns, the five guys of One Direction hit up the "Men in Black 3" premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre, ready to face any kind of challenges.

The fivesome, who kicked off their headlining U.S. tour on Tuesday night, took a break from the road to catch the film. They also chatted with MTV News on the red carpet about why they felt they needed a line of defense for the fete.

"We're safe [with them and we'll use them on] anyone who gets brave," Louis Tomlinson joked about their Nerf guns. But the fellas did have a real reason for wanting to catch the film: They are big fans of the "Men in Black" franchise and have been for quite some time.

"[They are] great films, aren't they?" Tomlinson added. "I just think it's fun and the action's great. We were young when the first came out, so we kind of grew up with them."

Once inside the theater, instead of having to fend off anyone who might have gotten in their way, they gave the guns away to a few young fans who ran up to them. While security did their best to keep fans away from the boy banders, one young girl managed to get to the floppy-haired Harry Styles. All five guys agreed to give the girl their autograph. Before the film started, they hung out in their seats, munching on popcorn while adoring fans and their moms checked the guys out.

Later on, at the after-party held on the USS Intrepid, fans followed the band as they made their way around the bash, including down several flights of stairs to the bathrooms. They didn't stop for anyone, but they smiled and waved occasionally.

The guys won't have too much time to hit up more movie premieres since they are back to playing Thursday night (May 24) in Virginia. One Direction will continue on their summer tour through July. Meanwhile, "Men in Black 3" opens Friday.

Check out everything we've got on "Men in Black 3."

[Smells Like News] 'So You Think You Can Dance' Shaking Things Up For Season Nine

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe talks to MTV News about why 'SYTYCD' will benefit from its new one-show format.
By Natasha Chandel

"So You Think You Can Dance"
Photo: Fox

The show that started the dance, dance revolution is back for its ninth season. "So You Think You Can Dance" will premiere Thursday night (May 24) to a bevy of changes that will certainly spice up the veteran reality show and bring forth a new cast of physically gifted creatures ready to pull at America's heartstrings.

While the show has always aired twice a week, with a performance episode one night and a results show the next, this time around, they're merging the performance and results into one concise event. Whether it's a result of diminishing ratings over its nine-year tenure or the over-saturation of talent competitions, "SYTYCD" will be the first reality series to air once a week.

"Well, you know, once you've got one decision to make, 'You're going home,' it's very difficult to stretch that over an hour and with some shows we're even stretching it over two hours! So, it's much easier now to, sort of, get it all into one show," executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe told MTV News at the Fox Upfronts [May 14].

But Lythgoe assures us the episodes will still consist of the usual elements: a group routine, solos, appearances by all-stars and a visiting dance act. "Maybe even a dancing dog, who knows?" Lythgoe joked.

From the look of the first teasers for the show, the talent level is at its peak. Lythgoe praises the increased creativity he is seeing with new contestants and always speaks highly of the show's reputed choreographers. Although there is no mention of this season's selected choreographers on Fox's website, many of the recurring fan favorites include Tabitha and Napoleon D'Umo (hip-hop), Sonya Tayeh (contemporary) and Tyce Diorio (Broadway), to name a few.

"What I'm seeing is some really interesting hip-hop this year," Lythgoe said of this year's auditions. "Animation is really coming in; popping ... now, we're finding other areas to pop."

If this season is anything like past, viewers will be enthralled by the passion of young dancers aspiring to make their dreams come true by pushing themselves to their physical and emotional limits. Perhaps "SYTYCD" host Cat Deeley put it best: "The thing about dancers is they're a certain breed. You don't do it to become rich and famous, you don't do it to have a really long career or to be the star, you do it because you can't imagine your life not doing it."

What do you think of the new format for "So You Think You Can Dance"? Leave your comment below!

[Smells Like News] Will Smith Admits Time Travel In 'MIB 3' Was Tricky

'We would sit around for hours trying to figure out what happens if you go back into the past,' actor tells MTV News.
By Josh Wigler

Will Smith at the premiere of "Men in Black 3"
Photo: MTV News

NEW YORK — For "Men in Black," aliens aren't out-of-this-world enough on their own anymore. Time travel needs to be brought into the equation as well. The third installment in the star-studded sci-fi series adds that fourth dimension-bending element as Agent J (Will Smith) travels back in time to work alongside a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save the future. It's as complicated as it sounds, not just for the fans, but for the actors and filmmakers themselves.

"You cannot put your head around time travel," Smith told MTV News on the "Men in Black 3" red carpet in New York on Wednesday. "We would sit around for hours and hours trying to figure out what happens if you go back into the past and you do something [differently]."

It's a conundrum that kept director Barry Sonnenfeld up at night while shooting the third "Men in Black" movie. "Coming up with ideas and plots and stories for aliens was easy, but time travel was really hard," the filmmaker confessed. "Every time you think you have it figured out, you would wake up at three in the morning and think, 'But wait, if I kill him, wouldn't he ....' You have to start all over again!"

In the real world, time travel is a tricky concept for "Men in Black" newcomer Alice Eve to wrap her head around, too. "[The existence of] time travel would be weird," she said. "I could go back to your childhood and change it, and then you would be somewhere else right now. You wouldn't be with MTV. Would you be happy with that?"

The answer, Ms. Eve, is a resounding no, especially since this job afforded this lucky reporter the chance to ask the infamous Donald Trump to weigh in on the time travel debate. We asked the "Apprentice" host and real-estate mogul for his thoughts on which of the two "Men in Black 3" concepts is harder to accept — time travel or aliens — and his answer was predictably priceless.

"You always have to go with time travel," he said. "We've seen plenty of aliens, believe me."

For Brolin, the answer isn't so easy. The younger Agent K said that as an actor, he's able to "cheat time travel" by spending months with characters living in different time periods. "I believe in aliens, too," he said. "They're just so much fun. I grew up on Asimov, Ray Bradbury, 'Martian Chronicles,' all of that stuff. So neither [concept is hard to believe]. I love both. I don't care if it's not true: It's true to me, in my head!"

In the end, there's no doubt that time travel creates some wacky, existential questions that can keep the mind boggled for hours — which is exactly why Smith refuses to think about it too much.

"Trying to figure out those [questions]? Just forget it," he laughed. "Just try to make it funny and don't ask."

Weigh in on the time travel versus aliens debate in the comments section below!

Check out everything we've got on "Men in Black 3."

[Smells Like News] Ke$ha Gives Flaming Lips Frontman His First-Ever Toe Tattoo

Wayne Coyne talks about what happens when you work with 'freaks' like Ke$ha on The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.
By James Montgomery

Ke$ha
Photo: Getty Images

Flaming Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne took away more than just a vial of blood when he traveled to Nashville to record with Ke$ha. (Though, really, you'd think that would be enough.) He also left with his first-ever tattoo ... not to mention a newfound respect for the wild-child pop star.

"Most of the time, if someone's willing to work with me, they're going to be a freak. And Ke$ha ... I sort of thought that she would be a freak, I'd heard about her and we'd tried to get a hold of her earlier," Coyne told MTV News backstage at the Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama. "We showed up at her house, and she has a tattoo gun that she gives everyone a tattoo with, so within 20 minutes of being at her house, I had a tattoo on my toe; it's the only tattoo I've ever had.

"We were set to do this one song that I had prepared, and we went into the studio that night, and stayed there until about 2 in the morning, and did four songs, just making stuff up," he continued. "And the next day [we] worked for another couple hours. She's funny, she's gracious, she's imaginative, she's creative and she's a lot of fun to be around."

The result of that collaboration (a song called "2012") shows up on the Lips' special Record Store Day double-LP, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, a thoroughly out-there collection of songs and sound-collages that — as the title implies — the band recorded with the likes of Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Neon Indian, Yoko Ono and, uh, Coldplay's Chris Martin ... to name just a few. But will fans get to hear even more of the Flaming Lips/Ke$ha team-up? Well, Coyne certainly hopes so.

"We really loved making this music together — I think I've probably done six or seven songs with her — and I know a lot of her fans like ['2012'], but I don't know if we'll put more songs out there," he said. "She has other agendas besides doing music with Wayne, you know, but I hope so, because I think it's really great, crazy, unexpected music. And she, to her credit, loves what we do. She wants it to be whatever. She has no limits of what she wants it to be."

And don't think the Heady Fwends sessions will be the last time Coyne and Ke$ha share time (or blood) in the studio. If anything, the Lips' recent output of, uh, non-traditional releases — songs encased in gummy skulls and fetuses, 24-hour noise-jam freakouts that play for all eternity, limited-edition vinyl filled with actual blood, etc — suggests Coyne and Co. are just getting started ... and they're going to get even weirder before they're finished.

"That's been the beautiful thing about all of these weird collaborations and projects; you work with freaks. Even working with someone like Chris Martin, he's very open to, like, 'Let's do stuff!' That's the great surprise about it," Coyne said. "I don't think people are surprised when we work with a group like Lightning Bolt or Neon Indian — people think of us as like-minded — but the surprising thing with the Chris Martins or the Ke$has, they're like us too, they just don' play music that sounds like that all the time."

[Smells Like News] Kanye's 'Cruel Summer': Cannes Reviews Are In!

Critics agree the film's seven-screen display is a unique experience that hooks audiences.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian at the "Cruel Summer" premiere at Cannes
Photo: Getty Images

Kanye West's latest project comes in the form of his short film "Cruel Summer," which the rapper produced, wrote and directed. He premiered the experimental 30-minute flick in Cannes during the city's famous film festival, providing the audience with a unique experience. Instead of watching the film on one large screen, viewers watched it on seven separate displays, which sometimes showed different angles of each shot at once.

The movie centers on Kid Cudi, who plays a car thief who falls head over heels for a blind Arabian princess. And while the story entertained those in attendance, critics agree that the film's spectacle and music are what hooked audiences.

The Story
"Cudi stars as a thief of high-end sports cars who falls in love with a blind Arabic princess. But the princess' father won't allow the pair to marry unless the thief can help her see, so the hero must find a way to make it happen (metaphorically). The story is secondary to the pyrotechnics, with new music from West and a thumping surround-sound quality that makes a 3-D Michael Bay effort feel like an iPad short." — Steven Zeitchik, 24 Frames

The Experience
"Inside the tall white pyramid, seven huge screens were installed in front of padded bleacher-style seating: five in a three-180-degree panorama, one on the ceiling, and one below the stands. ... The film felt like a mash-up of high-gloss Doug Aitken-style video installations, concert video backing panels, and narrative, big-budget music-videos. The movie flickers to life on the ceiling screen, as a hatch opens and boots drop through and onto the screen below. Soon, masked car thieves played by the G.O.O.D. Music crew survey the sports cars in a posh garage, while a masked Kanye and Kid Cudi engage in a Tarantino-style pop-culture debate. ... After bickering, they jump into Lamborghinis and shoot down the streets of Doha to a remix of West's recent single 'Mercy.' Then the soundtrack downshifts into a remix of Salem's 'I'm Still in the Night' as the film becomes more of a mythic romance, replete with Arabic architecture, desert vistas, and flowing fabrics." — Logan Hil! l, GQ

The Sound
"The film is heavy on the use of music and sound, the seats often shaking from the bass. Several times during the under-30 minute clip, the audience would sway to the beat of the songs, which often feature music from West's G.O.O.D. music album." — Rebecca Ford, The Hollywood Reporter

The Final Word
"The big takeaway here for the average Kanye fan is that there's new music involved, although it's unclear if that new music is off the G.O.O.D. Music album, was put together just for the flick, or will be released in some as-yet-undecided (but definitely revolutionary) form.

But as a vocal, unashamed fan of 'Ye's 'Runaway' movie, I actually can't wait to see this, Kid Cudi-leading-blind-girl-around-by-strings and everything. Will it be released online? In movie theaters? Or will there be a traveling seven-screen beach pyramid that you and I can one day immerse ourselves in? Dare to dream. Dare to dream." — Amos Barshad, Grantland

[Smells Like News] Pusha T Has Become 'A Student' Of The-Dream

'I've learned so much about song structure from The-Dream,' G.O.O.D. Music MC tells MTV News from his studio.
By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rahman Dukes

Photo: MTV News

Pusha T is laser-focused on his debut album at the moment, trying to craft a cohesive musical project. But if you thought the G.O.O.D. Music signee would hole up in the studio with his boss, Kanye West, think again.

Over the weekend, MTV News caught up with Pusha in Atlanta, where he was in the studio working closely with The-Dream. The two first linked up when producer Rico Love sent one of Push's tracks to Dream for a feature and eventually collaborated on a few more things. In addition to lending his vocals to the album, The-Dream has been guiding Pusha through the recording process, helping him take his work to a new level.

"It really started with this beat [from] Rico. We were like, 'Yo, Dream would just sound amazing on the record, period.' So we sent it out and it came back so quick. Dream was like, 'Man this is one of the ones,' " Pusha recalled. "Personally, I never thought the record was going to come back that quickly. I was in New Orleans somewhere and Rico was like, 'Aye! Dream did it — he on the phone!" I thought, "OK, wait a minute this might really be something."

Pusha wouldn't reveal exactly how many tracks the two had banked together, but he explained why the R&B singer/producer is the perfect fit for this album.

"Musicality, to me in general, is missing, but [Dream] is a musician, he's a fundamentalist. I've really taken on the student role," Pusha continued. "I feel like I'm in with the best of the best. You've got Dream on one end, you've got Kanye on another end, and you can learn so much. I really look at myself as just a rapper's rapper, but I've learned so much about song structure from Dream.

'This is the most I've ever rewritten," he added. "I wrote the 'Automatic' record, sent it to Dream, and he was like, 'Aye, you rapping too damn much,' and I'm like, 'OK.' How [would you not] listen to the writer of everything? How [would you not] listen to the producer of everything?"

The-Dream was just as enthusiastic about working with Pusha on the album. "I always personally felt like he was one of the best at what he did, period," Dream said. [There's] lots of guys that are great from a rap standpoint, but in songs they're not as great. Sometimes [you need to say], 'Hey, move this part here and this is your hook,' or 'Let's write about this, or let's tap that emotion and let's not rap past the emotion of where it is.' "

For the producer, who has banked countless hits for stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé, it all comes down to focus on proper songwriting and structure. "Compare it to great people, whether it's the B.I.G., whether it's Tupac," Dream explained. "I remember in '96, when 'All Eyez on Me' dropped, I wanted to see the credits, and I seen DeVante [Swing's] name — I seen this R&B guy do it. If you really notice, R&B guys actually did always make the best rap records."

Luckily for Pusha, he's got the R&B maestro on his side.

"It's a lot of pressure now, I think, for Pusha to do exactly what I knew he was gonna do, which is write a song," Dream said. "Like write it as a song, not as, 'I have to battle you guys. I'm going to say the hottest line next.' "

Pusha's album is sure to make a splash when it finally drops. On Wednesday (May 23), he released the Rico Love-produced "Exodus 23:1," which seemed to take some subliminal shots at YMCMB. Lil Wayne tweeted one simple message after hearing the song: "F--- pusha t and anybody that love em."

Are you excited to hear what Pusha T's album will sound like? Tell us in the comments!

[Smells Like News] Phillip Phillips' 'Idol' Victory And The Cry Heard 'Round The World

When his tears fell during Wednesday's 'American Idol' finale, Phillips instantly became the most relatable champ in the show's history.
By James Montgomery

I think I'm finally coming around on Phillip Phillips.

Yes, I'm aware that I've spent the past 19 weeks making fun of his grouting delivery (that's "growl/shouting," for the uninitiated), criticizing his every performance and referring to him as "Kris Allen 2.0," but none of that comes into play here. Because what changed my opinion of Phillips had nothing to do with his singing — in fact, the moment of reconsideration actually occurred when he wasn't singing. It happened when he was crying.

See, when Phillips broke down in tears during his performance of "Home" on Wednesday night's "American Idol" finale, it wasn't just the show's most touching moment in years, it was the most personal he's gotten all season. It taught me more about him than any hometown-visit piece or expertly edited contestant-confessional vignette ever could. For the entire season, he's been an enigma, a slightly scruffy oddball who never really seemed to be that interested in actually winning (or taking Tommy Hilfiger's fashion advice). Early on, he built a wall around himself, and he never let viewers get a glimpse at what lay inside — until he finally allowed himself to get lost in the moment of triumph, as the confetti fell and the ! audience cheered. That's when the wall came down and the tears began to flow.

And that's when I realized that everything I knew about him was probably wrong.

Because Phillips isn't some aloof, obstinate singer/songwriter dude who's been to a ton of DMB shows. He doesn't possess the supreme ego required to believe that his words are poetry and his songs can save the world. He is just a regular kid from Leesburg, Georgia, one who says stuff like "Music's fun, dude," and one who was overcome with the emotions of the moment and the sheer magnitude of his "Idol" win, to the point where singing his coronation song became secondary and all he wanted to do was share his triumph with his family. And that's exactly what he did, performance be damned. In other words, he acted exactly like you or I would, had we just won an internationally famous singing competition and suddenly become a star.

In that instant, I realized that Phillips has never had a day of stage training in his entire life, that, unlike pretty much everyone else who auditions for "Idol," he hadn't been dreaming of this moment since he was a talent-competition tyke. He truly never believed he could win, because normal people never would. And so he started crying, real genuine tears, the kind that seize your body and make everything else an afterthought — the kind that professional entertainers rarely get, mostly because they prevent them from entertaining. I've never been able to fathom how a person could cry and sing at the same time, and yet, each year on "Idol" (and on stages around the world), I see trained talent do exactly that, shed crocodile tears while still nailing the chorus. It is oddly robotic, not to mention slightly off-putting. I'm glad Phillips didn't try to do it, and now I know why.

I'm not sure if his "Idol" victory is good for the show (probably not), or if he'll be able to buck the recent trend and actually become a superstar (though "Home" is a nice start), but for one night, I wasn't concerned with either of those things. Phillips' emotional outpouring may very well have been the Cry Heard 'Round the World, serving notice that he's much more than the realest "American Idol" champ in history: He's an actual human being. In that moment, he became instantly relatable, even to his staunchest of detractors (like me). And because of that, I'm willing to let my icy heart thaw just a little bit and wish him the best. And even though it goes against my every willfully difficult impulse I'll close with this: All hail Phillip Phillips, the People's King. Long may he reign.

[Smells Like News] Justin Timberlake Returns To Music As A Film Composer

Fiancée Jessica Biel hires JT for her film 'The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.'
By Kara Warner

For those of you who've been eagerly anticipating Justin Timberlake's return to music, that day has come. Sort of.

Timberlake has been hired by fiancée Jessica Biel to serve as the music supervisor and composer for her new film "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea."

According to The Wrap, "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" revolves around a grieving widower who attempts to get over his wife's death through a new friendship with an imaginative young girl. Biel will not only star in the film, but serve as a producer under her production company Iron Ocean Films. Jeffrey Dean Morgan ("Watchmen") will play the widower and Chloë Grace Moretz ("Kick-Ass," "Dark Shadows") will play the imaginative new friend.

There's no word yet as to whether Timberlake might also make an appearance in the film, but it would make sense, given the singer/actor's recent self-imposed vacation from the music industry to concentrate on building a film career.

The big question here is if Timberlake's musical compositions and supervision will translate into actual new music from the onetime chart-topper. Only time will tell. The 31-year-old has kept himself very busy in recent years with his work in noteworthy films like "The Social Network," along with his involvement in MySpace and his venture into the world of home décor for HomeMint.

This is the first professional collaboration between longtime lovebirds Timberlake and Biel, who got engaged over the holidays last year and are said to be planning a big summer wedding.

[Smells Like News] Phillip Phillips & Jessica Sanchez's Last "American Idol" Performances

Rounding out the 11th season of “American Idol,†the final two contestants of Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez took the stage for one final time before a winner is named.

On Tuesday night’s (May 22) episode, Phillips and Sanchez went through three different rounds rocking out the final performance episode to win the hearts of America and the judges one last time.

The evening began with song selections from creator Simon Fuller. Up first, the 16-year-old songstress sang her rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing†while the 21-year-old jammer gave his version of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.â€

During the second round, the former pawn shop employee gave his sexy take on Billy Joel’s “Moving Out†while Jessica sang Yolanda Adams’ hit “The Prayer.â€

Finally, finishing off their third round were the songs that will be released as the crowned winner’s first single. For Sanchez, that was her tune "Change Nothing", which the judges weren’t thrilled with. Randy Jackson was blunt with his opinion, saying, “"Let me be straight up, I did not love the song,†while Jennifer Lopez also gave her advice, explaining, "You have to be able to say to someone, 'This is not me', you can change songs. Those are your options as an artist."

The final performance of the night could be described with the old saying “save the best for last†- as Phillips closed things out while getting a standing ovation for his tune “Home,†in which Jackson applauded and said, "Dude, I loved the song, I loved you, I loved the marching band, everything about that was perfect!"

Making the night even more performance packed, last season’s winner Scotty McCreery and Jason Derulo both took the stage.

Tune into FOX tomorrow night at 8/7c to find out who will be this year’s “American Idol†and check out tonight’s performances below!

[Smells Like News] Noisy Kid at Theater Hit in the Face By Irate Titanic Fan

A Washington state man fed up with a noisy kid in a movie theater behind him stepped over the seat and punched the 10-year-old in the face.

The man told police he thought the person he hit was a grown man.

The film in question? Titanic in 3-D. He was with his girlfriend and had asked the people sitting behind to quiet down and stop throwing popcorn.

But they laughed, and thus, one got drilled in the mouth.

"I got so mad that it just happened," Yong Hyun Kim, 21, told police who arrested him at the AMC Kent Station 14, in Kent, Wash.

The 10-year-old boy lost a tooth and suffered a bloody nose.

Kim spent a night in the Kent city jail and appeared in King County District Court and was released, said D.A. spokesman Dan Donohoe.

He was with second-degree assault. If convicted, he could be sentenced to three to nine months in jail. He will be arraigned May 31.

The boy, identified in the police report as KJJ, was was watching the movie with three friends, all talking when Kim told them to be quiet.

They did, KJJ says, but when he whispered something, Kim jumped over the seat, threw an iced drink at them and punched him in the face.

Kim said something to the effect of "You know what, I paid a lot of money to see this."

The man has a point there. The concession prices really are brutal.

[Smells Like News] Casey Anthony "Dreading" Upcoming Court Date

Earlier this week, Casey Anthony's attorneys accepted a subpoena that forces her to testify in a civil lawsuit, and she is not happy about it.

Anthony, 26, is angry that it will affect her plans to leave the U.S. after her probation ends in August, as she must be available to testify.

Says a source close to the accused child killer:

C. Anthony

"Casey was really hoping to leave Florida and never look back. She was really ready to move on with her life. This has ruined everything."

Anthony will have to answer tough questions about her statements in the days after her daughter, Caylee Anthony, was reported missing.

She claimed that a babysitter named Zenaida Gonzalez had kidnapped the little girl, an allegation that turned out to be entirely untrue.

Now a woman by the same name is suing Anthony for defamation.

"Casey just wants this case to go away," says the source. "She definitely doesn't want to testify, and she's annoyed that she has to."

These days, Anthony is living in seclusion in South Florida.

She must stay in the state due to her probation for check fraud, and ventures out only infrequently, afraid that she will be recognized.

But according to two individuals close to her, she looks much different. "Quite honestly, she's gained a few pounds," says the source.

"She does nothing but sit in front of her computer and eat."

Casey Anthony remains unemployed and broke, and, according to probation reports, she recently stopped attending counseling.

One thing she does do: speak regularly with her mom.

Sources close to the Anthony family have confirmed that Casey began mending her relationship with Cindy several months ago.

She does not communicate with her father, George Anthony, whom she accused of molesting her during her murder trial.

Anthony will return to the Orange County courthouse to testify in January 2013, possibly sooner, as a result of Gonzalez's lawsuit.

[Smells Like News] 'American Idol' Finale Is Making Jessica Sanchez 'A Big Ball Of Emotions'

'I'm very nervous but I'm very excited at the same time,' 16-year-old contestant tells MTV News before the season 11 finale.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Kelly Marino

It's all come down to this: the finale of the 11th season of "American Idol", with 21-year-old guitar-strumming southern gentleman Phillip Phillips pitted against 16-year-old vocal powerhouse Jessica Sanchez. There are endless sports-related clichés we could use ("the end of the line," "the bottom of the ninth inning," " the home stretch"), but the point is, the end is really near.

When MTV News caught up with Sanchez moments before she headed into the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles for the start of the finale, we only had enough time to ask about how she was feeling at the end of such a whirlwind of a season.

"I'm very nervous but I'm very excited at the same time," Sanchez said, seeming a little breathless. "Like I've told everybody else, I've got this big ball of emotions and it's not going to be over until the night is over ," she admitted. "But I'm really excited for the whole show, it's going to be a great show."

Wednesday's (May 23) finale aimed to be as action-packed as the ten finales before it. We spotted countless "Idol" alumni on the red carpet, including Fantasia Barrino, Stefano Langone, Scott McIntyre, Naima Adedapo and Casey Abrams. All of them seemed to be torn between rooting for underdog Sanchez and frontrunner Phillips.

Although Sanchez has exhibited legitimate talent and pop-star potential over the course of the season, most experts think Phillips has the title in the bag. We'll know for sure soon enough!

Who do you think will be the next American Idol: Phillip Phillips or Jessica Sanchez? Leave your prediction in the comments section below!

Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' "American Idol" page, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

[Smells Like News] Donald Driver Wins Dancing With the Stars!

One point separated first-place Katherine Jenkins from William Levy and Donald Driver at the end of Monday's Dancing With the Stars performances.

Each finalist earned another 30 from one more routine on Tuesday's finale, but the votes were in, and that Mirror Ball already had one name on it.

That name was Donald Driver.

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd

The Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver was named the winner of the 14th season, making pro Peta Murgatroyd a first-time champion.

"Amazing! This is awesome!" Donald said when asked how he felt. His competitors, not surprisingly, took their defeat in stride, and with class.

William and Cheryl Burke finished in third place. "It was an amazing experience," said the Cuban actor. "I thank you guys for all you have done for us."

"I'm going to miss all of you guys, I love you!"

Jenkins and Mark Ballas were the runners-up.

"Thank you so much, Mark, you've been... I can't put into words how much I've loved this," the ever-gracious Katherine Jenkins said in defeat.

"And thank you to everybody who's had me on the show. It's been an absolute dream, thank you." "Congratulations, my man," Mark Ballas said.

Driver's win makes eight for men in 14 seasons. Donald is also the third NFL pro to win after Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward, last season's champ.

What do you think? Did Donald deserve it?

By Jocelyn Vena

It's raining men and cheesy music all over the "Magic Mike" soundtrack. A number of classics made the cut, and so did star Matthew McConaughey, who will be putting his shirtless stamp all over a track called "Ladies of Tampa."

Other songs on the soundtrack include a cover of the Weather Girls classic "It's Raining Men," by Countre Black, as well as the Foreigner classic "Feels Like the First Time." The soundtrack will drop on June 26, , just in time for the film, which opens June 29.

Noticeably absent from the track list is Ginuwine's "Pony," which star Channing Tatum said he dances to in the flick. "I dance to a pretty sexy hip-hop song, 'Pony,' " . "It's been one of my all-time favorite songs to grind to, so hopefully it's going to be [good]. And everyone did their own dancing. There is not a bit of substitution, everyone was game to take it off and get crazy."

"Magic Mike" follows Tatum, the title character, as he takes a newbie stripper (Alex Pettyfer) under his wing. In addition to catching those two dance around shirtless, audiences will see McConaughey, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello playing strippers in the Steven Soderbergh-directed film. Tatum will join MTV News during MTV Sneak Peek Week on Thursday, May 31, to chat about the release. It will all go down at the 5 Towers on Universal CityWalk the week of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

The full track list for the "Magic Mike" soundtrack:

»Alice Russell, "Breakdown"
»Countre Black, "It's Raining Men"
»The Unknown, "Bang Bang Boom"
»Black Daniel, "Gimme What You Got"
»Cloud Control, "Just for Now"
»Ringside, "Money"
»Joe Tex, "Sassy Sexy Wiggle"
»Vegas Audio Ninjas, "Mo Cash!"
»Beth Thornley, "Wash U Clean"
»Win Win featuring Blaqstarr, "Victim"

[Smells Like News] Kelly Clarkson Brings 'American Idol' Expertise To 'Duets'

ABC's new reality singing show puts seasoned superstars onstage with amateur singers.
By Christina Garibaldi

Photo: MTV News

At first glance, "Duets" may just seem like another reality singing competition, but the new ABC show couldn't be more different. Because this time, the superstars are not behind a judging panel, but onstage with the contestants.

The show, which premieres Thursday (May 24), pits pop star Kelly Clarkson, Sugarland singer Jennifer Nettles and R&B crooners Robin Thicke and John Legend against one another as they pair up with two amateur singers, whom they found before the show.

Each week the stars will battle it out, duet style, in front of a live audience to ultimately win the grand prize for the amateur singer: a recording contract with Hollywood Records.

"I basically just found my two people on my own," Kelly Clarkson told MTV News recently at an event announcing ABC's fall lineup. "[Robin] found them a completely different way and John found his a completely different way, it's kind of really random, but it's cool though."

Going into the competition, Clarkson figured she had a slight advantage given her experience on "American Idol," which she won during the first season. But as soon as cameras started rolling for "Duets," she realized she had her work cut out for her. "It's a lot of fun, but it's a lot of work," Clarkson admitted. "I totally thought I had a one-up from 'Idol' ... It is way harder."

"I'm just going to try and do kind of what I did on 'Idol' and hopefully that will help my people," Clarkson said. "It's not really as much up to us, the stars on the show, it's more for the kids that really just need to make sure they are bringing their A-game every week."

Are you excited for "Duets"? Let us know in the comments.

[Smells Like News] 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Delayed To 2013, Adding 3-D

Paramount pushes back release date from this summer to March 29, 2013, in hopes of better box office internationally.
By Kara Warner

For those of you who were eagerly anticipating the June 29 release of the "G.I. Joe" sequel, your wait just got longer. In a surprise bit of movie-schedule shuffling, Paramount has pushed back the release of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" from this summer to March 29, 2013.

Why the nine-month delay? The studio wants to convert the film into 3-D. According to Deadline, Paramount made the move in hopes adding 3-D will translate to more impressive box office numbers internationally.

"We're going to do a conscientious 3-D job, because we've seen how it can better box office internationally," an unnamed studio exec revealed to the site. "Jim Cameron did all of 'Titanic's' 3-D in post — and look how well that movie turned out."

Paramount told MTV News the studio's only concern is making the best movie possible and the movie will be best in 3-D. A representative for director Jon Chu declined to comment on the release-date change.

Deadline points out the fact that this is not the first time Paramount has pushed back a release, and it has been rewarded for that decision: The delay of Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" resulted in the director's biggest box office hit to date. Also, the March release date has been proven to have major moneymaking potential in the wake of the global success of "The Hunger Games."

An argument can be made that the release-date change is all about dollar signs, much like most decisions in Hollywood. We could also speculate that another reason for the move might be the pressure of having to perform well against the likes of seemingly unstoppable juggernaut "The Avengers" and the very highly anticipated July 20 release of "The Dark Knight Rises."

Check out everything we've got on "G.I. Joe: Retaliation."

[Smells Like News] Katy Perry Splits From Boyfriend Robert Ackroyd

Billboard Music Award winner's breakup with Florence and the Machine guitarist 'not a nasty thing.'
By Kara Warner

Katy Perry's love life is making headlines once again. The pop princess has reportedly split with relatively short-term love Robert Ackroyd.

According to Us Weekly, the "Part of Me" singer and the Florence and the Machine guitarist parted ways very amicably, due in large part to the fact that they were dating for only a few weeks.

"It wasn't that serious," a source told the magazine of Perry's relationship with Ackroyd. "It's not a nasty thing, and they are still talking, but Katy told him to do his thing, and they'll talk soon."

Another source added, "No hard feelings. She's really busy, and so is he."

News of Perry and Ackroyd's romance broke last month when the pair were spotted holding hands, kissing and generally canoodling at the Coachella music festival in California.

The 27-year-old is reportedly still recovering from her highly publicized breakup with husband Russell Brand back in December after two years of marriage. She has yet to speak publicly about the split, but during her acceptance speech of the Spotlight Award at Sunday night'sBillboard Music Awards, she hinted that her new single, "Wide Awake," might reflect emotions she dealt with regarding the divorce.

"Tonight, later, when I get on the stage, I'm going to be singing my personal, intimate song," she said, before shouting out her date. "The real rock star here is my grandmother. She's 91, and she's from Las Vegas. I can't wait to go and do shots with you after this!"

[Smells Like News] Brad Pitt Says Violence In 'Killing Them Softly' Is 'Important'

Actor also tells reporters at Cannes Film Festival that he and Angelina Jolie have yet to set a wedding date.

When it comes to the comings and goings of Brad Pitt, nearly everything the A-list actor says or does makes international news. That's why, when Pitt participated in a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday (May 22), he found himself faced with several questions not entirely related to his upcoming flick "Killing Them Softly."

And according New York magazine's Vulture, Pitt was more than happy to answer all of them.

He was asked about the heavy violence in "Killing Them Softly" and whether, as a dad, he had any reservations about playing a killer. In the gritty crime drama, he portrays a hitman who is hired by a crime boss (Ray Liotta) to find and kill a pair of overzealous upstarts who attempt to stake their claim by robbing a high-profile card game staged by Liotta's character. But according to Pitt, the role didn't disturb him at all.

"Not in any way, because murder is an accepted possibility when you're dealing in crime," he told reporters. "I would have a much harder time playing a racist or something along those lines. That would be much more unsettling for me than a guy who shoots another guy in the face." Pitt went on to say that the violence in the film is realistic in that it's not glorified for the sake of entertainment.

"We live in such a violent world. I certainly grew up hunting, which is a very violent act," he said when asked if the film was in any way influenced by the popularity of graphic video games that involve gangsters and hired killers. "Have you ever had a hamburger? Have you seen how they butcher cows? It's barbaric, it's horrendous, it's very violent. This is the world we live in, so I see it as absolutely important to film."

The Oscar-nominated actor even happily answered a quandary about whether or not his upcoming marriage to longtime love Angelina Jolie would affect his work schedule.

"We have no date. We actually really, truly have no date," he said. "It's something that makes sense to us ... and we're still hoping we figure out marriage equality in the States before then, before that date."

Jay-Z is showing off his eclectic tastes with the first group of acts announced for his upcoming Budweiser Made in America Festival in Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway on September 1 and 2. Among the 28 acts that will hit three stages for the show are first night headliners Pearl Jam, as well as Jay himself, Grammy-winning EDM star Skrillex, Odd Future and the Maybach Music Group featuring Rick Ross, Wale and Meek Mill. Other performers include Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Passion Pit, Santigold, D'Angelo, Miike Snow, Dirty Projectors, X, Janelle Monae, Prince Royce, Rita Ora, the Knocks and a DJ set by Savoy.

Jigga is curating the festival, which will feature the long-awaited live return of R&B singer D'Angelo and one of Pearl Jam's only U.S. dates this year. Tickets for the show go on sale on Wednesday and more acts will be announced soon.

Prince Royce paid tribute to Jay for including him on the bill, tweeting, "Proud to announce that I'll be performing at #MADEINAMERICA Fest Sept 1-2 Thanks to Jay-Z for having me & for curating this great festival!" Before unveiling the line-up for the fest, Jay said
he was hoping to break down some barriers with the Labor Day gathering.

"Whenever I enter into a project, I try to hit on some touch points. The first thing is: Is it great?" Jay asked rhetorically at a May 14 press conference on the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. "The second one is: Is it gonna push the culture forward?"

[Smells Like News] Jessica Alba: Pretty In Pastel

Proving just why she's one of the biggest fashion icons, Jessica Alba was spotted out and about with a friend in Beverly Hills, CA on Tuesday afternoon (May 22).

The gorgeous brunette looked chic in a multi-color outfit as she rocked coral skinny jeans, a mint green top and denim vest as she lunched with a friend at Le Pain Quotidien which caused quite the paparazzi frenzy.

In other news, as previously reported by GossipCenter, the mom of two is the June 2012 cover girl for Marie Claire magazine where she opens up about everything from fashion, family, parenting and her business "The Honest Company."

When talking about her company, which she has been working on for the last three and a half years, the 31-year-old explains where the idea came from and why it's so important to her adding, "I took a year off from acting when I had Honor, and I was home with her, diapering her, cleaning up after her, and I had a real frustration that I couldn't find healthy, nontoxic, and affordable products that actually worked. So I decided I needed to do something about it while my family and friends have young children."

Besides getting inspiration to start an eco-friendly empire, the "X-Men" star explains that being a mom also helped her in growing up and understanding her sexiness saying, "Now that I'm older, I've learned how to own it, but I'm still not very overt. There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I'm going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge."

Check out the video below from Jessica's Marie Claire cover photo shoot!

[Smells Like News] Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday Tour Is 'Intimate But Big'

'It's kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is,' creative director Laurieann Gibson tells MTV News.

Nicki Minaj is currently taking her Pink Friday Tour around the world before circling back Stateside in July. Given Nicki's love for all things over-the-top, it's no surprise that her first-ever headlining gig is all about going big or going home.

The rapper's right-hand lady, creative director and choreographer Laurieann Gibson, told MTV News that when they sat down to plot the trek, "There was a challenge to get through a 70-minute show" after Nicki had spent her last few tours opening for the likes of Lil Wayne and Britney Spears, but what they cooked up is something Gibson said she is "really, really proud of."

"I just put Nicki Minaj on the road, actually, and her tour is super special to me and doing really well," Gibson told MTV News about working with the rapper again after their eye-popping Grammy performance back in February.

"Nicki Minaj was so much fun for me, and it was like a real breath of fresh air, and musically, to get back to the rap game, to see a female MC dominate the pop charts, this, historically, for me, I feel a bit of responsibility," she added. "When I did 'The Rain,' that video for Missy [Elliott], and just with Puff and the evolution of Bad Boy Records and my responsibility there and the pressure to maintain dominant rappers [on major award shows] and not let them lose street credibility, the years of all that torture ... and all of those moments. When I got back to Nicki, I was so happy to be in that soulful music again, in that fight, in the idea that rap is not dead and that somebody like her can be many things in many genres and not be limited.

"I love [when] I heard Roman Reloaded. I loved her delivery. I love the way she flows," she added. "So the Pink Friday Tour is really good and it's kind of like a glimpse back to what a real rap show is. It's intimate but big at the same time."

Will you check out Nicki on tour? Let us know in the comments!
